For me, many of the people who bring the most beauty are the most surprising. It's not always the people I know best. It's the kid who beams because he's having a new experience or because he had a success where he'd struggled so long. It's the adult who has found a way to live out her passion in her everyday work.
Yesterday morning, I had coffee with a young woman (that makes me feel so old to say it that way) who made my life beautiful for the 40 minutes we spent chatting and for hours and hours after.
Leanne is the volunteer coordinator at Coburn Place, an organization the Active 20-30 Club of Indianapolis volunteers at and where I've chosen to serve additionally. Volunteer Coordinators are typically happy, energetic, positive people. Leanne is no different in that regard, but there's something more to her.
She's authentic and genuine. She has a real passion for the people she serves - the organization's clients, her volunteer base and Coburn's supporters in general. She connects with the mission she's serving and with the outcomes Coburn was created to bring about.
And she makes it look effortless. She makes you feel as if you are the single most important person and deserve (and get) her sinular focus.
She asked me how I manage all the commitments I have. My answer: I'm a duck - calm on the surface, but legs a paddlin' underneath. I want to believe Leanne is a duck, too.
